Issue 004: Cover Shoot

"When's your golden hour?" I asked Safia.

"5 pm LA time" she estimated, she made sure I was aware the time difference would mean I'd be up at 5 AM in Kuwait to make a FaceTime call look cover-worthy. My long term admiration for Sumou and love for Safia's poetry was the incentive behind this shoot.

Safia's poetry, although deeply personal, speaks for an eerily universal experience. The silly melancholic feeling of sending your best regards to things that never change, which inspired the theme of the shoot.

Leading up to the day of the FaceTime shoot, Safia and I decided on an off the wall pink and orange outfit she had never paired together before. After a virtual tour of her sunlit apartment, I scouted the place for a decorative spot. What a bizarre experience screen-capturing on FaceTime while Safia posed next to her bookshelf.

As the sun rose for me and set for her, we experimented with a trusty Youtube video of colors changing on her TV. Safia sat on her living room floor while we talked and the colors veered on her face. I thought to myself, how lucky I am, as a photographer,  to sit across the world from a poet.

Thank you, Jood for the experience and the love as always. Thank you, Safia for your kind collaboration. ◆
